Family Archive Preservation Program free to public

The Cabarrus County Public Library is presenting a program for preserving family archives this weekend.

Light and humidity are damaging to documents and photographs, so proper techniques in preservation should be used. Participants can learn these techniques under the instruction of Preservation Specialist Alexandrea Pizza.

Those interested in protecting their family history should meet in the Auditorium of the Cabarrus County Public Library, located at 27 Union Street in Concord, Saturday June 8, at 11 a.m.

The cost is free, and the class is open to the public.

Pivotal to Charlotte's X-Games bid, ESPN execs scouting area for second day

CONCORD, NC (WBTV)- Charlotte's bid to win a contract to host ESPN's Summer X Games is facing a critical hurdle this week. Wednesday marks the second of two days network executives will tour the area and facilities that would host the event.

Charlotte Motor Speedway and the zMax Dragway would be two venues used for the event.

On Tuesday, WBTV was there as the Speedway enlisted the help of a NASCAR driver AND X-games gold medalist, Travis Pastrana. Pastrana took ESPN officials for a whirl around the race track.

In April, the X Games announced that Charlotte was among the four finalist cities competing to earn three-year contracts to host the North American summer stop on the X Games global tour beginning in 2014.

Sheriff's Office looking for man in string of vehicle B&E's

CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (WBTV)- The Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's assistance in identifying a man they believe to be responsible for a series of vehicle break-ins.

Early in the morning on May 24, the Sheriff's Office began receiving calls in reference to vehicle break-ins from several neighborhoods off of Rocky River Road in Harrisburg.

Deputies responded to the incidents and began investigating. They said there was forced entry into most of the vehicles, and that items were stolen from inside.

A man was captured on video at 2:10 a.m. looking into vehicle windows in these neighborhoods.

He was wearing gloves and a hat.

Anyone with any information on these incidents or the man pictured should contact the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office at (704) 920-3000.

If you wish to remain anonymous you may contact CRIMESTOPPERS at 704-93-CRIME, which can also qualify you for an award.

So called "flushable" wipes causing big problems for local neighborhoods

CONCORD, NC (WBTV)- It's a dirty secret that threatens to cause homeowners a messy, smelly, and expensive problem. All over the country, and right here in the Carolinas, city and water treatment officials say those fresh wipes that are supposed to be flushable, are causing sewer systems to back up, sometimes in people's homes.

Concord, like most cities, uses a truck like this to clear clogged sewer lines, and lately, those clogs are caused by these. The package says they are flushable and that they are sewer and septic safe, Gary Fritz says look at the evidence.

"They say they're biodegradable, they're flushable, but they're not dissolvable," Fritz told WBTV. "They're biodegrading, but after four months, and it doesn't stay in the sewer system for four months."

He's kept a flushable wipe in a jar for months, along with other things that end up in the toilet, to show the difference.

High School seeks volunteers to drive new cars

The Jay M. Robinson High School is holding a fundraiser for its Athletic Program this weekend.

Rather than donating money, participants have the opportunity to give ten minutes of their time.

A Charlotte dealership is helping the High School raise money, by offering free test drives of a new Lincoln on the school's campus in Concord.

Each test drive brings the Athletic Program one step closer to its $8000 goal. Volunteers who test-drive a second vehicle will help raise an additional $20.

Car enthusiasts can ride in style at the Jay M. Robinson High School, located at 300 Pitts School Road SW in Concord, Saturday June 1, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The cost is free, and the Test Drive is open to ages 18 and up. Must have a valid driver's license. Online registration is required.
