This Weekend in Stanly County

This Weekend in Stanly County

(By Bridget Huckabee) - There’s no shortage of water here in Stanly County this weekend. The lakes are full and the rivers are running at full spate. Crops and flowers are leaping out of the ground with all this moisture from Mother Nature. The hay is rolled into big round bundles and the pastures are greening up for a second crop. Come and enjoy our lush countryside with a leisurely ride along one of our scenic byways. Rent a canoe at Morrow Mountain and enjoy a close-up view of our wildlife along the river banks. And don’t forget, in the evenings there is free music and a free movie to enjoy under the stars.

Thursday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 am at the Agri-Civic Center, the Stanly County Public Library presents “Greg Zelnik is Carolina Zelnik” in Keep our Planet Green. Admission is free and all ages are welcome.

Every Thursday throughout the summer, the Albemarle Parks and Recreation department host a free concert series titled Thursdays at the Station.

(By Bridget Huckabee) - There’s nothing like drifting down a lazy river on a warm summer afternoon. At Morrow Mountain boat landing you can rent a canoe or a paddle boat for $5.00 ($3.00 an hour after the first hour) and with a little gentle paddling take in the beauty of the Pee Dee River and its abundant wild life. Take a side trip up the Uwharrie River directly across from the boat landing, or paddle up to the Falls Dam. If you own a kayak you can put in at the Morrow Mountain boat landing, Dugan’s Nook on the Falls Reservoir, or at the Alcoa boat landing on Badin Lake. Exploration, wild life viewing and a little gentle exercise are all yours on our beautiful lakes.

Ready for some good music? On Thursday evening, bring a chair to Market Station, visit the concession stand and settle down to hear The Trip Rogers Band and some good rock.  The Albemarle Parks & Recreation Department host this summer concert series titled “Thursdays @ The Station”.

Sundae Art Gallery to open in downtown Concord

The Sundae Art Gallery is opening in Concord with the kickoff of their “Second Fridays” series from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 14.

The first group show, entitled “Eight way from Sundae,” will feature eight artist graduates and their instructors from the Artist in Rendition program of Braitman Studios in Charlotte.

The gallery plans to host a new art event on the second Friday of each month.

“We want to bring in high quality artists who have “found their voice” but are still selling art that is a great value,” gallery manager Pete Brown said. “We will have guest curators to help us in the selection process.”

Brown added, “Concord and area residents have always enjoyed the downtown Art Walks, sponsored by the Cabarrus Arts Council, which occur on Friday nights five times a year.
